Which Character to Select from the 5-Star Targeted Convene in Wuthering Waves

Hi guys in this Beginners Choice guide for Wuthering Waves I will help you understand what Character to get from the 5-Star Selector a.k.a. Targeted Convene and most important WHY?

Besides that in order to help you decide I’m going to give you a short description on each character available on the Selector with Pros and Cons.

The 5-Star Selectors includes: Jianxin (multi role), Calcharo (dps), Verina (healer), Lingyang (dps), Encore (dps). The game at launch gives 2x 5* Selectors. With the help of this you can reroll and select your first 5* Characters 3 times in Wuthering Waves.

How to Unlock and Claim the FREE 5-Star Selectors in Wuthering Waves

You first 5-Star Selector a.k.a. Voucher of Reciprocal Tides (see photo above) can be claimed from the Mailbox and will be available for you for 365 days. The Mail can be unlocked by reaching Union Level 2 while following the mainstory. Note: You can also redeem your codes after unlocking the mailbox. Click Here to see what Redeem Codes are available and how to Claim them.

The second 5-Star Selector a.k.a the Beginner's Choice Targeted Convene unlocks after pulling a 5-star character from the Utterance of Marvels - Novice Convene.

I recommend you don’t use the first Voucher to Select any of the 5-Star Characters at first to avoid getting a duplicate. Here’s why!

The Novice Convene Utterance of Marvels (see photo below) will give you the first 5-Star Character at 50 Pulls. The Game will provide you with enough FREE Pulls for you to Finish the Novice Convene after claiming the Mailbox Rewards and doing a couple of events and quests. This Banner will give you a Random FREE 5-Star Unit.

Besides that, one 10-Pull here costs only 8 Normal Pulls. So basically for the price of 40 Normal Pulls you will get your first 5 Star. After receiving your 5-Star Unit the banner will disappear.

Which Character to Select from the 5-Star Targeted Convene in Wuthering Waves

The Characters available in this Banner are: Jianxin (multi role), Calcharo (dps), Verina (healer), Lingyang (dps), Encore (dps).

*Here is why this is very important and how it will affect you on choosing your next 5* Units from the FREE two 5-Star Selectors.

The second 5-Star Selector a.k.a the Beginner's Choice Targeted Convene unlocks after pulling a 5-star character from the Utterance of Marvels - Novice Convene. (see photo below)

In the Beginner’s Choice 5-Star Selector you can get one 5-Star Character of your choosing after 80 pulls.

Which Character to Select from the 5-Star Targeted Convene in Wuthering Waves

The Game will provide you with enough FREE Pulls for you to Finish the Beginner's Choice Targeted Convene even after pulling for your first 5 Star in the previous Banner. All you have to do to get another 80 free pulls is play through the Mainstory, collect a couple of treasure boxes from the open world and join a couple events.

The Characters available in this Banner are: Jianxin (multi role), Calcharo (dps), Verina (healer), Lingyang (dps), Encore (dps).

Now to understand why I said that you shouldn’t use your 5-Star Selector Voucher yet is because the game will give you a random 5-Star from the Novice Banner. Depending oh who you will get will help you choose your next 5* Unit.

If you are lucky, you will pull a standard 5-star character before that. However, it does not count towards pity for other banners. After receiving your 5-Star Unit the banner will disappear.

Following the above mentioned guide will help you should avoid getting a duplicate. Since the endgame/Tower of Adversity needs 3 teams, having a wide variety of Resonators/Characters is usually the better option. The only exception is Verina’s Resonance Chain 2, granting an extra Photosynthetic Energy and 10 Concerto Energy after using her Resonance Skill.

Tips & Tricks for team wide variety, endgame, and duplicate avoidance

Here's why you should still wait and don't select any of the five characters yet. Now even if you have two selectors available to get yourself a five star straight away I will give you another reason on why you shouldn't yet.

Because Wuthering Waves is a new game the devs will provive us with enough Premium Pulls to reach the first 50/50 in a limited banner.

After playing the game for a couple of hours, doing some events and claiming your rewards from the mailbox you will have enough resources to do 80 Pulls on the limited banner, whichever you choose, and in the worst case scenario if you lose your 50/50 on the limited 5-Star Character, will end up with another Random Standard 5-Star, provided you already got the first one from the novice banner.

So basically this way is the most efficient way to avoid ending up with duplicates, and have a wider choice over your Selection. I know that maybe waiting is not very fun but if you are Free-to-Play you’ll thank me later when you end up with 4x 5* Characters instead of getting duplicates and limiting your options for endgame and Tower of Adversity.

Now selecting a 5-Star Character should become easier.

"Why I'm giving you this advice it's because I have lost my 50/50 and I ended up with Encore and Calcharo and I still have two five star selectors ready for me select the characters I need to complete my roster and have more success in the endgame content which is where you will end up too.

You also need to consider having different elements DPS’s because there are enemies immune to certain Elements, so this way you will be able to clear content easier.”

Which 5-Star Character and Why?

If you are not concerned with meta, you should always pick the 5-Star Resonator that YOU want. Wuthering Waves is a new game and new information will be found soon, which may invalidate the information found here.

Now let me tell you about every Character on the Standard Banner that can be selected, give you the Pros and Cons and a couple of tips on whether they are main DPS, Supports, Healers or even if they can be used as a multi-role in your teams.

If you want Verina

Which 5-Star Character and Why? Verina guide

Pros:

  • Strong team-wide heals and buffs

  • Good outro, team wide ATK Buff and Heal

  • No on-field time, swap in to buffs, swap back to DPS

  • Easy to use

  • Cheat Death mechanic (10 min cooldown)

Cons:

  • no gameplay cons in version 1.0

  • weak design

Additionally, Verina’s kit allows her to synergize with all main damage dealers by providing an ATK% and DMG% buff. Overall, Verina is a no-brainer pick.

If you want Encore

Which 5-Star Character and Why? Encore guide

Pros:

  • Strong DPS. (even if not using animation cancel)

  • Ranged and Melee.

  • Easy to learn.

  • Strong ultimate.

Cons:

  • no dedicated Fusion support in 1.0.

  • needs animation cancel on N5 for max DMG.

  • hard to parry.

If you can consistently pull off her animation cancels, Encore is currently one of the strongest damage dealers. Thankfully, her damage is decent even if you ignore her animation cancels.

If you want Jianxin

Which 5-Star Character and Why? Jianxin guide

Pros:

  • Auto Parry on Skill.

  • Strong AoE - CC Ultimate. (gathers enemies)

  • Shield Generator.

  • Provides Heals.

  • Multi-role capabilities.

  • Can be played as DPS with the right build.

  • Can solo.

  • The most versatile unit in 1.0

  • The most complete unit in 1.0

Cons:

  • no the best DPS.

  • on-field pretty much all the time.

Jianxin is multi-role utility character who provides shields and gathers enemies. Can be build with different sets—raw elemental DMG bonus or maximize shield/heal capacities.

If you want Calcharo

Which 5-Star Character and Why? Calcharo guide

Pros:

  • High DPS.

  • Animation Cancel abilities.

  • Very active gameplay.

  • High-skill ceiling with huge rewards.

  • Great synergy with Yinlin.

  • Sephiroth (lore wise).

Cons:

  • Long animations

  • Requires constant focus

  • Hard to play with all the combos

  • Slow attacks

Calcharo, is a high skill ceiling character. Learning his rotations increases the DPS output. While if you do his rotation wrong, he takes a huge hit to his damage total.

If you want Lingyang

Which 5-Star Character and Why? Lingyang guide

Pros:

  • Good DPS.

  • Quick attacks.

  • Aerial attacks mechanics.

  • Fun to play.

  • Unique playstyle.

Cons:

  • Hard to play especially Airborne.

  • Requires higher skill cap to learn.

And Lingyang is another damage dealer with a unique playstyle that swaps between ground and aerial combat. This might cause issues with certain enemies as it requires a higher skill cap to master).

Tips and Tricks

If you have Verina

Go for a main DPS. You will need 3 teams for the endgame. Both Encore and Calcharo are equal in DMG; it will mainly depend on your playstyle preference.

If you don’t have Verina

If you need Support/Heal, Verina should be your next pick. Other alternative as a healer/support is Baizhi but she’s 4-Star. In endgame you will need 3 teams, having another buffer/healer is always a great choice.

If you have Everyone

Feel free to Select anything else: Jianxin is a multi-role character that gives shields and gather enemies. And Lingyang is a DPS with airborn mechanics. (this might cause issues with certain enemies as it requires a higher skill cap to master).

Should you pick a duplicate?

The simple answer is No! The endgame/Tower of Adversity require 3 teams, having a wide variety of Resonators is usually the better option for a higher chance of completing it.
