Elgato Prompter Review – Teleprompter with Built-in Screen for Content Creation

I’ve been using the Elgato Prompter for a few weeks now, and it’s honestly a game-changer for me and I think for anyone doing live streams or any sort of video content. The built-in screen is such a smart addition, no messing around with tablets or extra devices. You just plug it in via USB-C, and it works seamlessly with your PC or Mac.

Keeping eye contact with the camera is effortless since the text is right where you’re looking. The software integration with Elgato’s Camera Hub can adjust text size or scrolling speed even voice synchronization. It makes everything quick and intuitive and most importantly fit to your needs and eye sight. Plus, the display is super clear and easy to read, even during long shoots.

What I love most is that if you are not using it as a Teleprompter it becomes an extra monitor for Discord Chat, Youtube Video or pretty much anything else really.

Setup was surprisingly simple, too. It came with all the adapters I needed to fit my camera, and the whole thing is lightweight-ish and sturdy.

Unlike traditional teleprompters that rely on external devices like tablets or smartphones, the Elgato Prompter features a built-in 9-inch display with a 1024x600 resolution, connecting directly to a PC or Mac via USB-C.

Design and Build Quality

The build is a matte black plastic finish which measures approximately 8.9 x 8.6 x 11.1 inches and weighs 690 grams without accessories. It is compact and lightweight, suitable for various setups, including home studios and on-the-go productions. The Elgato Prompter includes multiple backplates and step-up rings, which makes it compatible with a lot of cameras, from DSLRs to webcams. Additionally, hot-shoe mounts on the top allow for the attachment of accessories like lights or microphones.

Performance and Usability

The built-in display functions as an external monitor, allowing users to run the teleprompter software or mirror their screen content. This integration makes live streaming, video recording, and virtual meetings smooth and effortless.

Advantages

  • Integrated Display: The built-in screen removes the need for extra devices, making setup easier and reducing mess.

  • Versatility: Various mounting options and compatibility accessories. The Prompter works with a wide range of cameras and accessories, making it great for different production needs.

  • User-Friendly Software: The Camera Hub software enhances script management with intuitive controls and customizations, such as text size, scrolling speed and even voice synchronization, contributing to a more efficient workflow.

Elgato Prompter vs. Classic Teleprompter

Elgato Prompter vs. Classic Teleprompter: Key Differences

  1. Integrated Display

    • Elgato: Comes with a 9-inch built-in screen (1024x600 resolution) that connects via USB-C. No need for external devices like tablets or phones.

    • Classic: Requires a separate display device, adding complexity and clutter.

  2. Software Integration

    • Elgato: Works seamlessly with Elgato Camera Hub for script control, text size, and speed adjustments. Can mirror chat or other windows easily.

    • Classic: Often relies on external apps, making setup less streamlined.

  3. Setup and Compatibility

    • Elgato: Lightweight and compact with included backplates and step-up rings for compatibility with various cameras and lenses (up to 20mm focal length).

    • Classic: Bulkier with limited compatibility unless customized.

  4. User Experience

    • Elgato: Natural eye contact with voice-sync scrolling and a sharper, flicker-free display.

    • Classic: Manual scrolling is common; may lack advanced features like voice-sync.

My Verdict is that The Elgato Prompter is ideal for modern creators seeking efficiency and simplicity, while classic teleprompters may suit larger, standalone setups.

If I had to nitpick, the 9-inch screen might feel a bit small for some people, but for me, it’s just right. Overall, it’s made my workflow so much smoother. Totally worth it if you’re serious about leveling up your on-camera delivery!
